Hoag Classic officials announced this week that four-time major champion and recent Presidents Cup International team captain Ernie Els is among the early commits to this year’s PGA TOUR Champions tournament, which will return to Newport Beach Country Club, March 4-8.
Els, one of the game’s most successful golfers for almost three decades, is known for his effortless power and free-flowing swing. “The Big Easy” has achieved 72 career victories, four of those being major championships: the U.S. Open in 1994 at Oakmont and in 1997 at Congressional, and The Open Championship in 2002 at Muirfield and in 2012 at Royal Lytham & St Annes. He is one of six golfers to twice win both the U.S. Open and The Open Championship.
Ernie Els to appear at this year’s Hoag Classic
“We are excited to announce the commitment of Ernie Els for this year’s Hoag Classic,” said Jeff Purser, executive director of the Hoag Classic. “Attracting a field of professional players that rival any major championship in golf, we are proud to host an event that not only contributes to the health and vitality of our community but creates a compelling competition for our fans to enjoy.”
Celebrating its 25th year, the Hoag Classic, with Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian as title sponsor and presenting partners Konica Minolta and City National Bank, is one of the finest stops on the PGA TOUR Champions drawing world-renowned golf legends to compete for the $1.8 million purse.
Els will join other newcomers Retief Goosen, Angel Cabrera and Tim Herron who are expected among 80 players to compete in the 2020 tournament.
Goosen is a two-time U.S. Open champion – 2001 and 2004 – and has more than 20 combined wins on the PGA Tour and European Tour. He was in the Top Ten of the world rankings for more than 250 weeks between 2001 and 2007. In 2019, Goosen was elected into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
Cabrera won the U.S. Open in 2007 and the Masters in 2009. He is the only player from Argentina to be Top Ten in the official World Golf Ranking.
Herron has won four PGA Tour events – the Honda Classic in 1996, the La Cantera Texas Open in 1997, the Bay Hill Invitational in 1999 and the Bank of America Colonial in 2006.
In years past, the Hoag Classic has featured players with more than 500 worldwide professional victories, including 50 major championships. The event has also featured more than 40 PGA TOUR Championship members in the World Golf Hall of Fame, many of whom are still competing.
